Communication and Education Work Group

Welcome to the Oakland County Regional Housing Partnership (RHP) Communication & Education Workgroup hub. This page was created to help Oakland County residents better understand housing insecurity, homelessness, available resources, and how local partners are working together to ensure everyone has access to safe, stable housing.
 

About This Workgroup

The Communication & Education Workgroup was formed out of the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) Regional Housing Partnership, and is also working in conjunction with the Oakland County Blueprint to end Homelessness.

Our purpose is to educate, inform, and empower both community members and decision-makers by delivering clear, accessible information on housing and homelessness in Oakland County. We believe that awareness leads to action, and we aim to break down complex systems into simple, digestible tools for the public.

Our Goals

  • Increase awareness of and support for the importance and benefits of accessible, affordable, and attainable housing in Michigan.

  • Implement an education campaign to build awareness and support from Oakland County Community members

  • Implement an education campaign to build awareness and support from Oakland County policymakers

  • Implement an outreach plan to effectively get information about services and resources to individuals and families at risk or experiencing homelessness in Oakland County

Oakland County's housing affordability problem is growing. How can we solve it?

  • Leaders in the government, nonprofit, and for-profit sectors are coming together to make housing more attainable for all county residents.

  • ​A new project is aiming to demystify Oakland County zoning for developers, government officials, and residents by creating a single map that shows residential zoning designations for the entire county.

Federal policy brings challenges “from all directions” for housing in Oakland County

  • Affordable housing developers and advocates for the housing-insecure fear a negative domino effect from federal funding cuts and other policy changes.

  • Oakland County is in the midst of a housing crisis, as rents rise and available housing supply dwindles, but at least some relief is on the way.

​Understanding the Coordinated Entry System

Coordinated Entry is the countywide intake and referral process that connects people to shelter, housing programs, and support services based on urgency and need—not on a first-come, first-served basis.
