Lakeshore Legal Aid Training

Community Housing Network, Lighthouse of MI, and Lakeshore Legal Aid have been working together to provide a variety of trainings to housing providers. These are free trainings offered via Zoom every other Friday for community partners to attend.

Topic 1: Landlord-Tenant Law (Part 1) – Friday, January 13th, 2023: 11:00am12:30pm

  • Understanding the landlord-tenant relationship—who is a tenant and who is a trespasser, squatter, etc.

  • Subsidized housing and its requirements

  • Understanding leases (including VAWA language)

  • Self-help evictions

  • What Lakeshore can/cannot do to help

  • Establishing communication

  • Budgeting and payment plans; resolving income difficulties

  • Importance of ledgers

  • What constitutes legal advice

 

Topic 4: Client Services (Part 2) - Friday, February 24th, 2023: 11:00am-12:30pm

  • Communication with landlords and counsel

  • Court testimony

  • Other issues: Stalking, domestic violence, drug use, children & education
